Today, our guest blog comes from Matt Freeman of The Numbers Studio, a member of our C100 Business Club, who shares how simplifying financial management and embracing a human-first approach can help business owners stay focused, balanced, and successful during the busy season.

Hi there, I’m Matt Freeman, and I’m the proud founder of The Numbers Studio, an accountancy and advisory practice based in Brighton. Our mission is simple: to empower business owners by simplifying their financial management, so they can focus on growing their businesses and achieving success on their terms.

How I Ended Up Living and Working in Brighton
I’ve always been drawn to Brighton for its creative and entrepreneurial spirit. It’s a city brimming with diverse businesses and innovative thinkers, and it just felt like the right place to launch my business. The energy here is contagious, and it aligns perfectly with the way we do things at The Numbers Studio. When I moved to Brighton, I knew I wanted to be part of this vibrant community, and I haven’t looked back since.
What Makes The Numbers Studio Unique to Brighton
What sets us apart at The Numbers Studio is our genuine, human-first approach to accounting. We understand that each business in Brighton is as unique as the people behind it, and we aim to create meaningful, lasting connections with every client. Our approach is all about empathy and being jargon-free—because financial management shouldn’t feel intimidating. We focus on helping our clients define what success means for them, whether that’s scaling up their business or achieving a balanced, sustainable lifestyle.

My Personal Journey with Numbers
I grew up in a family where our livelihood depended on a family-run business. I saw firsthand how overwhelming it could be to manage finances, taxes, and everything in between. My dad and grandfather faced many challenges as entrepreneurs, and that experience deeply shaped my passion for helping other business owners simplify their financial journey.
I started The Numbers Studio because I wanted to create a service that not only helped entrepreneurs manage their finances but also empowered them to focus on what they do best. One of my proudest moments was working with a client who couldn’t afford a car in 2019. Just a few years later, in 2023, they sold their business for a seven-figure sum. Moments like that make me proud to do what I do—it’s about helping people build fulfilling futures.
The Digital Transformation in Accounting
The accounting industry is changing rapidly with the rise of cloud-based software and AI-driven insights, making financial management more accessible than ever before. At The Numbers Studio, we embrace these innovations, but we never forget the importance of human connection. While technology plays an essential role in modern accounting, it’s the personal touch that makes all the difference. We pride ourselves on combining the latest tools with our empathetic approach to deliver the best results for our clients.
To stay ahead, I ensure that we’re constantly learning and evolving. We’re regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICAEW), which means we regularly attend courses to stay up to date with the latest trends and updates. This continuous learning helps us provide tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of today’s businesses.

Overcoming the Challenges of Running a Business
Like any business, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges along the way. From people issues to cashflow concerns, we’ve had to deal with everything that comes with running a start-up. But honestly, that’s part of the journey. It’s these challenges that help us empathize with our clients because we’re living and breathing the same difficulties they face.
One of the toughest moments came recently when we had to say goodbye to a long-standing team member, our operations manager. Losing someone who shared our values and was such an integral part of our team was incredibly hard. But we’re excited for the future. Change can be tough, but it’s also a part of growth.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
If you’re thinking of starting a business or entering the accounting field, my number one piece of advice is simple: Put your clients at the centre of everything you do. Ask yourself, “What would a good client want?” every time you make a decision. If you keep your clients' best interests in mind, you’ll be on the right track.
Also, park your ego. As accountants, we’re not the heroes in the story—our clients are. It’s all about supporting them in their journey and helping them achieve their version of success.

Three Practical Tips for Business Success
Deliver More Value Than You’re Paid For: This might seem counterintuitive, but trust me—it works. When you go above and beyond for your clients, they’ll appreciate it and stick with you for the long haul.
Be Like a Labrador: What do I mean by this? Be inquisitive, friendly, and caring. Imagine how a Labrador greets you—it’s always happy, positive, and makes you feel special. Try going first—smile at a stranger, make them feel valued. It works wonders!
Stay Positive and Lead by Example: Positivity is contagious. Start small—go first with a smile or a positive word, and see how it changes your day and the people around you.

At The Numbers Studio, we’re more than just accountants—we’re a trusted partner on your journey to business success. Our modern, human approach to financial management helps you focus on what you do best while we take care of the numbers.
