Fourth and Church Hosts 31 Days of Riesling: Taste the Best of Germany

Today, our guest blog comes from Fourth and Church, a member of our C100 Business Club and an award-winning cornerstone of the Brighton and Hove food and drink scene, celebrating 31 Days of German Riesling with exceptional events and unique wine pairings.

An integral part of the Brighton and Hove food and drink scene for nearly ten years, the ever-popular and award-winning Fourth and Church continues to delight and surprise its guests year after year and bottle after delicious bottle.

Opened in 2004 by owners Paul Morgan and Sam Pryor on Church Road and inspired by the noisy bars of Seville and Jerez, devouring delicious plates alongside a glass (or two) of chilled fino, and hours spent post-shift in some of New York’s late-night chef hangouts consuming exceptional no-frills food, wine and cocktails.

They wanted to open a neighbourhood restaurant that offered an understated experience in an informal and comfortable setting, delivering a glass of something extraordinary with a plate or two that delivered a big punch, but most importantly a desire to bring some of the more unusual flavours discovered from their travels, to a wider audience.

A few years later, it can be agreed that Paul, Sam and their team have delivered just that and much more!

Serving guests, as a restaurant, bar and bottle shop and regularly holding events exploring lesser-known regions and grape varietals with carefully paired dishes,

you can see why they keep winning award after award (Good Food Guide’s Top 100 Local Restaurant 2023, Brighton’s Best Wine List 2024) we could go on!

With over 800 wines available to drink in or take home, 40 wines are available by the glass on the carefully curated wine list, containing niche and small wine producers from across the world, combined with a team made up of exceptionally passionate and knowledgeable individuals, you know that the Fourth and Church events are going to be something pretty special; and the upcoming tasting with Connected Brighton celebrating 31 days of German Riesling will be no exception!

The Riesling grape makes one of the finest white wines in the world and is a firm favourite (bordering on the obsessive) at Fourth and Church. If you think that all Rieslings are sweet and have bad memories of dinner parties in the 70’s and 80’s, then think again.

Riesling is incredibly versatile ranging from lean and bone dry to luxuriously sweet. They are particularly age-worthy and can continue to develop for decades thanks in part to its high acidity, however many styles are produced to be enjoyed young. Germany remains the leading producer of Riesling and some of the most sought-after wines on the planet are produced by the country's leading winemakers.

German Rieslings are split into categories depending on their quality and also a separate category based on their level of ripeness at harvest. The categories all have different characteristics and also pair with different types of food. The most common drier styles are Kabinetts and Spatlese, look for those labelled ‘Troken’.

Wines of Germany is the UK arm of Deutsches Weininstitut whose mission is to create greater awareness of German wines in the UK. Deutsches Weininstitut’s annual Riesling campaign takes part in 13 countries, with the UK celebrating 31 Days of German Riesling throughout July. Needless to say, July is one of Fourth and Church’s favourite months!

Fourth and Church has won the 31 Days of German Riesling national award for the past two years with over 130 businesses taking part in promotions; quite the achievement. This year, hoping to win for a third time, Fourth and Church are enthusiastically celebrating one of their favourite grapes, having selected wines from visits to some of the World’s top producers for a daily changing wine menu, shelves stocked to bursting, three tasting events being held in July and a team that want nothing more than to share their expertise and enthusiasm, Brighton and Hove are in for a treat!

This informal tasting event held on 24 July from 7 to 9 pm will explore four of Fourth and Church’s favourite German Rieslings, highlighting the different regions and styles from this classic wine-producing country. Each wine has been carefully paired with a small plate from the kitchen team.

Whether you are a Riesling obsessive, have never tried Riesling and are keen to explore or just want a fun-filled evening with amazing food and wine with new friends then this is for you!
